Coffee on the Mountain: How to Drink Specialty Coffee on a Hike Without Gear
A summit coffee doesn't need a stove kit and a grinder. Here's the lightest way to brew real filter coffee on the trail.

Every gram counts
On a long hike, coffee gear competes with water and food for space. A drip bag weighs a few grams, needs no extra parts and fits in a jacket pocket.
Bring hot water in a flask
If you don't carry a stove, fill a good flask with just-boiled water before you leave. By the time you reach your break it will often have cooled close to the 87–94°C window printed on the box.
Brew on any mug
Tear the bag along the dotted line, hook the hangers on your mug or flask cup, and pour 150–180ml slowly in a few rounds. Lift the bag out and you have a true pour-over at the top.
Leave no trace
Carry a small zip bag for the used drip bags and take them home with you. Mountain paths stay beautiful when nothing is left behind.
